Greetings,
The Airplay icon keeps popping up in my menu bar every few seconds. When I click on it the only option is to Open Display Preferences, as Airplay is turned off. I don't have Apple TV so I'm curious what could be causing this - and how to get it to stop. Every time it pops up it catches my eye, driving me a little bit nuts!

Same thing was happening to me and this seems to have fixed it:
System Preferences -> Displays -> uncheck "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available"
I know this was posted over a year ago, but I figure anyone searching for this should have an answer.

If you read my post, I am not trying to set up Airplay. The icon pops on and off in my menu bar all day long and it's driving me nuts. I want to know how to turn it off. Airplay is not enabled, I don't have Apple TV, and my AirPort Express is unplugged at the moment.
Thoughts on how to get the icon to stop popping in and out?

Is your Bluetooth turned off?
I too am having this issue. It seems related to bluetooth as when I turn bluetooth off, the airplay icon goes away as well and doesn't come back on. However I need bluetooth for my mouse.
